POLICE in northern Spain have made 5 arrests over the alleged sale of a 14-year-old lady for €5,000 and several other bottles of whisky.
Officers from the Guardia Civil and the Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested the lady’s mother and father, each aged 35, alongside the alleged patrons, aged 40 and 42 respectively, and their 20-year-old son, who was set to marry the younger lady.
According to investigators, the deal happened in line with a Romani cultural ritual that has no validity beneath Spanish regulation.
The lady’s mother and father, from Corella, Navarra, agreed to promote their daughter to marry her off to an unknown man.
In return, they obtained €5,000, 5 bottles of whisky and a few meals from a pair in Lleida, Catalunya.
There, the younger lady ‘remained beneath the management of the buying household for the aim of consummating the pressured marriage’, in line with police.
She didn’t attend college and was pressured to beg for cash by the household.
The case got here to mild in October when officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra discovered the lady begging outdoors a neighborhood grocery store in Les Borges Blanques, western Catalunya.
She has since been positioned in a safety centre whereas the 5 detainees have been charged with human trafficking and compelled marriage.
