Niclas Herbst wins key position as Merz’s EU Parliament chief

Niclas Herbst gained an inside vote on Tuesday night to grow to be the chief of the 29-strong Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) delegation within the European Parliament.

His position, which he’ll maintain till 2029, will give him a key place within the internal circle of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose centre-right social gathering meets recurrently all year long in Berlin.

Herbst – who has been in Parliament since 2019 – pipped fellow MEP Christine Schneider to the put up, beating her 15 votes to 13 within the second spherical.
