Italy sends navy ship to assist of Gaza flotilla after drone assault

Crosetto harshly condemns assault on flotilla.

Italy’s defence minister on Wednesday deployed a navy ship to supply help to Italian residents on board a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying support following an in a single day drone assault.

Minister Guido Crosetto harshly condemned the assault on the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which occurred in worldwide waters off Greece and is the third such incident this month, including that the perpetrators have been but to be unidentified.

“Multiple drones, unidentified objects dropped, communications jammed and explosions heard from a variety of boats” – the GSF mentioned in a press release – “We are witnessing these psychological operations first-hand, proper now, however we is not going to be intimidated.”

Crosetto mentioned he had authorised the quick intervention of the navy’s Fasan frigate for “doable rescue actions” and to supply help to Italian residents travelling as a part of the flotilla.

The minister, who reportedly evaluated the choice with premier Giorgia Meloni, added that he had knowledgeable the Israeli navy attaché in Italy, the Italian ambassador and navy attaché in Tel Aviv, and the Italian international ministry disaster unit.

Crosetto mentioned he would report back to parliament on Thursday, stating: “In a democracy, even demonstrations and protests have to be protected when they’re carried out in compliance with worldwide regulation and with out resorting to violence.”

The Italian boats travelling with the flotilla, the most important unbiased initiative to ship humanitarian support to civilians in Gaza, departed from the Sicilian port of Augusta on 13 September.

Four Italian centre-left opposition politicians have been on board: MEP Benedetta Scuderi of the Green-Left Alliance, MP Arturo Scotto and MEP Annalisa Corrado of the Partito Democratico (PD) and senator Marco Croatti of the Movimento 5 Stelle.

On Monday, tens of 1000’s of protesters took to the streets in Rome and cities throughout Italy amid a basic strike to specific solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
