Italian boats set sail for Gaza with Global Sumud Flotilla

18 Italian boats carrying assist for Gaza will be a part of different vessels departing from Tunisia.

The 18 Italian boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla, the biggest impartial initiative to ship humanitarian assist to civilians in Gaza, departed from the Sicilian port of Augusta on Saturday afternoon.

Four Italian centre-left opposition politicians had been on board: MEP Benedetta Scuderi of the Green-Left Alliance, MP Arturo Scotto and MEP Annalisa Corrado of the Partito Democratico (PD) and senator Marco Croatti of the Movimento 5 Stelle.

The departure had been scheduled for final Thursday however was postponed twice on account of dangerous climate which delayed the journey of different flotilla boats from Barcelona, that are at present in Tunisia.

The Italian boats, together with people who arrived in Sicily from Genoa, will meet up within the Mediterranean Sea with different boats departing from Tunisia.

Swedish local weather activist Greta Thunberg is amongst these travelling on the flotilla from Tunis.

The fleet, together with the boats departing from Tunis, will comprise about 50 boats carrying round 600 folks.

Together, the boats will try to ship humanitarian assist to Palestinians in Gaza and overcome a naval blockade imposed by Israel.

The Italian vessels will carry meals collected in Genoa in current days, which has reached almost 500 tons, in line with the newest figures from the Genoese organisation Music for Peace which organised the meals drive.

Last week two flotilla boats anchored in Tunisian waters had been struck by what gave the impression to be drones launched from the Tunisian coast, prompting protests in Italy.
