France is already seeing widespread protests and highway blockades from farmers – to date, the most important union has not acquired concerned. But that would change if an EU treaty is signed this week.
The head of France’s largest agricultural union the FNSEA has threatened extra protests if the EU’s controversial Mercosur commerce deal is signed this week.
Arnaud Rousseau instructed France Inter radio on Wednesday that there shall be “a lot bigger protests” if the Mercosur deal is signed by the top of the week.
He added that if the settlement is signed “we are going to name on our networks to mobilise”.
“Everyone will determine the place they’re on the shape the mobilisation will take, for instance, checking imports of products in ports and making certain that public opinion is alerted.”

The FNSEA, which is dominated by cereal farmers, has not been concerned within the protests and has said its help for the federal government’s programme.Â
Instead the demonstrations are led by two smaller unions – Conféderation Paysanne and Coordination Rurale – whereas some native members of the Jeune Agriculteurs union have taken half in blockades, though the union’s official line is in help of the federal government.
