NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has stated Bondi shooter Sajid Akram’s gun licence was issued in 2023, not 2015 as police had initially acknowledged.
“I wish to right a file. I’ve been indicating that Sajid Akram, the 50-year-old male, has held a firearms licence since 2015. Mr Akram utilized for that licence on October 8, 2015, and it was beneficial that or not it’s issued in November 2015,” Lanyon stated.
“I’m suggested that he didn’t get a photograph taken as required by that licence, and the appliance lapsed in 2016.
“Akram utilized for a second licence in 2020, and it was issued in 2023. I believe it’s vital that the clear nature of the investigation gives that change.
“The preliminary data had been that it had been issued in 2015, and I believe it’s vital to provide that element. He was licensed to carry a Category A, B licence, and the firearms that we have now seized have been hooked up to that licence appropriately.”
Police have stated Sajid legally owned six firearms and belonged to a leisure gun membership. He was shot by police and died on the scene of the terrorist assault on Sunday.
