Boy, 4, and girl, 60, killed in Offaly home fireplace pictured for first time

A homicide probe has been initiated following a home fireplace that took the lives of two people in Co Offaly.

Mary Holt, 60, and Tadhg Farrell, 4, tragically misplaced their lives within the blaze at a property on Castleview Park in Edenderry round 7.45pm on Saturday. Another girl, in her 50s, is at the moment receiving therapy in hospital for accidents sustained.

Post-mortem examinations have been scheduled to happen on Sunday. Superintendent Liam Geraghty confirmed the launch of a homicide investigation throughout a press briefing at Edenderry Garda Station on Sunday.

He said that they think the home was focused by a person or people unknown at this level, and that the fireplace was deliberately set. He characterised the incident as a “reckless, callous and murderous assault on a household house”.

Irish Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan vehemently condemned what he labelled as a “deliberate callous assault” on the residence.

“There isn’t any place in a civilised society for such heinous violence. I be part of An Garda Siochana in interesting to anybody with data to return ahead,” he instructed RTE.

Earlier, Mr Geraghty knowledgeable the media: “Emergency providers, together with Offaly Fire and Rescue Service, National Ambulance Service and Gardai responded to the fireplace shortly earlier than 7.45pm.

“The fireplace was extinguished and the stays of two individuals, a girl aged 60 and a four-year-old boy, have been found deceased.A second girl, aged in her 50s, was transported from the scene by the National Ambulance Service and is receiving hospital therapy for severe accidents.

“The home has been declared a crime scene and is at the moment topic to technical examination by the Garda technical bureau. The workplace of the native coroner and the state pathologist have been notified.”

He added: “The stays of each deceased have been faraway from the scene and post-mortems will likely be carried out by the assistant state pathologist Margot Bolster on the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, commencing this afternoon.

“This homicide investigation is being co-ordinated from an incident room at Tullamore garda station beneath the course of a senior investigating officer.

“An Garda Siochana believes that the home was attacked by an individual or individuals unknown right now, and that the fireplace was intentionally began. This was a reckless, callous and murderous assault on a household house.”
