Louisiana AG urges NOPD to drop ‘sanctuary’ insurance policies, cooperate with ICE

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill is recommending New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick direct the company to cooperate with federal immigration authorities following a significant federal enforcement operation that resulted within the arrest of dozens of prison unlawful immigrants.

In a letter dated Friday to Kirkpatrick, Murill stated the division’s insurance policies seem to battle with state legislation and could possibly be interpreted as “sanctuary” insurance policies, which typically prohibit native authorities from cooperating with federal legislation enforcement in immigration issues. 

“NOPD should ‘use greatest efforts to help the enforcement of federal immigration legislation,'” the letter states. “I stay up for working with you and NOPD to make sure its insurance policies and actions adjust to state legislation.”

“At this time, I like to recommend that you just instantly direct NOPD officers and employees to totally cooperate with ICE and CBP,” she added, referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

In 2024, Louisiana enacted a legislation banning jurisdictions from adopting and implementing sanctuary insurance policies.

“As Superintendent of NOPD you’re chargeable for the issuance and implementation of departmental insurance policies,” the letter to Kirkpatrick states. “Policies that essentially require officers and staff to refuse to cooperate with ICE besides in very restricted circumstances violate Louisiana legislation and will topic the offender to felony prosecution for malfeasance.”

The letter got here amid a significant federal immigration crackdown within the Louisiana area, in addition to backlash from anti-ICE advocates. 

A New Orleans City Council assembly was thrown into chaos Thursday as anti-ICE protesters stormed the chambers, shouted down officers and clashed with police. 

The outburst got here in the future after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) introduced Operation Catahoula Crunch, a two-month federal initiative deploying 250 Border Patrol brokers to New Orleans and surrounding areas. 

The operation, referred to by protesters as “Swamp Sweep,” has intensified backlash from immigrant rights teams and triggered rising unrest at metropolis corridor.

The intent is to take away “prison unlawful aliens roaming free due to sanctuary insurance policies” that stop native authorities from honoring ICE arrest detainers, DHS stated.
