Move to name Palma de Mallorca airport simply Palma Airport, it was almost renamed after Rafa Nadal

In February, 2022, a web based ballot began calling for Palma airport to be renamed in honor of the current Australian Open champion, Rafa Nadal and now the controversy about renaming the airport is again on the desk. The Balearic Cultural Organisation (OCB) has requested the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to alter the official identify of ‘Palma de Mallorca Airport’ to ‘Palma Airport’, which has been the official and authorized identify of the town since 1988.

The president of the organisation, Antoni Llabrés, has requested Minister Óscar Puente to deliver the identify of the airport into line with the legislation and defined that ‘Palma’ is the official identify in response to Regional Decree 36/1988 of 14 April, at the moment in power. According to Llabrés, the metropolis of Palma is internationally recognized and doesn’t want any addition to be appropriately recognized with out inflicting confusion.

Llabrés burdened that, apart from Palma, there is no such thing as a different case of an airport in Spain that bears the identify of the town the place it’s situated with the addition of the island, area or autonomous neighborhood by which it’s situated for identification functions. Examples of this may be the imaginary “Barcelona Airport of Catalonia”, “Malaga Airport of Andalusia” or “Bilbao Airport of the Basque Country”, or “Zaragoza of Aragon”.

He added that, from an operational and industrial perspective, the IATA (PMI) and ICAO (LEPA) codes go away no room for doubt. The president of the OCB identified that “Palma de Mallorca” doesn’t correspond to the historic identify of the town as set out in Article 7 of the Statute of Autonomy (“The capital of the Balearic Islands is the town of Palma”) or in Law 23/2006 on Palma’s standing as capital.

He emphasises that the one official identify, each for the town and its municipal space, is ‘Palma’.
The OCB cites the preamble to Autonomous Decree 36/2011, in response to which ‘the place names of the Balearic Islands are a collective heritage that have to be safeguarded as a part of the linguistic and cultural heritage’. ‘As a car for details about our language, our historical past and our geography, it constitutes a basic pillar of our nation’s cultural id,’ it provides.

Furthermore, the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands establishes that the official names of municipalities and place names are the unique competence of the Autonomous Community, and the 1986 Standardisation Law establishes that it’s the accountability of the Government, with the recommendation of the University of the Balearic Islands, to find out the official names and place names. The OCB has requested the change from the president of AENA, Mauricio Lucena, and has met with the airport director, Tomás Melgar, and the pinnacle of the airport director’s workplace, Diego Llorca, to ask for his or her help for this initiative.
